About Yoga Synergy

Yoga Synergy was founded in 1984, by Simon Borg Olivier and Bianca Machliss.

The practice is based on a deep and sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology, modern medical science and traditional Hatha Yoga.

Foundations of Yoga Synergy

Simon and Bianca studied in India with Sri BKS Iyengar, Sri K Pattabhi Jois (Ashtanga Yoga) and Sri TKV Desikachar who’s teachings are of the lineage from Sri T Krishnamacharya. They also studied physiotherapy at university to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the body, which has enabled them to devise methods of practice that suit the western body, whilst still providing the physiological health benefits inherent in the science of yoga. The result is like a moving meditation, where one can develop strength and flexibility in body and mind, stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system to remain calm while exploring challenge and massage the internal organs while executing postures within one’s means.

Method and Benefits

The Yoga Synergy methods inform these classes that work actively, using stretch reflexes to engage and release muscles and in this way strengthen and lengthen the body at the same time. This is a slow to moderate dynamic practice, and for more experienced practitioners momentum may be included. Initially, natural breathwork to stimulate the Parasympathetic Nervous System, will invite a state of calm meditation and reduce the fight/flight response associated with stress and anxiety.

Through the physical practice, we approach union on a physiological level where it can positively influence our health, providing our body with strength, agility and balance. Yoga affects the mind by refining and simplifying connections, to show us natural truth.

This helps us to see our patterns, brought about through our life experiences and beliefs. Noticing these patterns we can make choices about how we process the world we live in and determine what’s required to achieve optimal living.
